was the triangle posts on the leeds & liverpool, telling the mileage,reversed for security reason, during the last war.

The signs appear back to front possibly due to canal boats being piloted from the rear(always steered even before motors added), so the signs are read as you pass them, also the horses pulling the barges couldn't read!!
The markers were also used to calculate tolls I believe.
