I used to live at Church near Accrington during the war and had to walk along the canal bank at Oswaldtwistle to go to the primary school. I was 5 years old. My older sister used to take me before she went to the Girls High School in Accrington. Being wartime we were in the midst of the 'blackout' with no street lamps, so the canal bank walk was often done in pitch darkness. Before moving to Dill Hall Lane in Church we lived in the vicinity of this photograph in a terrace house backing onto the canal, but only for 3 weeks as my mother hated it !
